Community Learning Project/Community Catalyst: The Community Learning Project was established in 2002 to develop new ways of helping the next generation of organizers and social change leaders learn from their peers and predecessors. Currently, the Community Learning Project is working in Hartford, Connecticut with plans to expand into Baltimore and New York City. HSF made a $15,000 grant to create a prototype training and educational program that prepares young people for long-term careers in organizing and leadership roles, by establishing a year long organizing internship which leads to an Associate in Arts degree program in organizing/community change at local community colleges. Downtown Neighborhoods Improvement Association/FYRE Youth Squad: The Downtown Neighborhoods Improvement Association, founded in 2004, is a voluntary group of residents and business owners from the Treme section of New Orleans. After Hurricane Katrina, DNIA helped found the FYRE Youth Squad - a citywide, youth-led organization working to effect positive educational change - to organize for quality education post-Katrina. HSF made a $15,000 grant award to support FYRE Youth Squad in addressing the current crisis in New Orleans schools, instituting a plan to transform John McDonogh High School into a pilot model for a world class community-centered public education, and establishing a media literacy and production center. Oasis/Community IMPACT: Oasis/Community IMPACT works on a grassroots level with young people in East Nashville, Tennessee around education reform and economic development. HSF made a $15,000 grant to support the development of a financial education curriculum relevant to low-income students, policy research and community education about predatory lending, and the development of a Student Bill of Rights aimed at outlining basic rights and standards from a student perspective to be used as targets and benchmarks for schools. Vietnamese American Young Leaders Association of New Orleans (VAYLA-NO): VAYLA-NO is a multi-issue youth organizing group that emerged during the post-Hurricane Katrina reconstruction in response to environmental racism in Eastern New Orleans. HSF made a $15,000 general support grant to support their efforts to advance leadership and service among Vietnamese youth; advocate for environmental, social, and educational justice issues; and promote cultural consciousness through awareness of different cultures, languages, and histories. |
