By far the most significant shift in HSF's grantmaking has been our growing commitment to social change grantmaking. Recognizing that our limited resources can be used more effectively to address the root causes of social problems rather than their symptoms, over the last several years the HSF made a concerted effort to shift funding from direct service and youth development organizations to those that focused on systemic change.
Today, the core of our work is making grants to help organizations achieve social justice for their constituents. Within the broader social justice area, we make grants to organizations that focus on Youth Organizing and Economic Justice organizing with low income families, particularly youth of color and no and low-wage workers. We also plan to develop new program areas over the next several years including a Fund for DC to promote resident-led decision making and organizing for low-income communities in Washington, DC and an initiative to foster support for social justice organizing in the South. |
