While Grantmaking is and will remain our core strategy, HSF believes that it is important to extend beyond just grantmaking to make the most of our role as supporter of social justice efforts. Going forward we will work to enhance our work related to Leveraging and Learning activities. By leveraging we mean using our position as a funder to strategically work with funders and donors to increase support for our issues and groups. We have done this through our creation of the California Fund for Youth Organizing and through our involvement with the Funders Collaborative on Youth Organizing. Leveraging can also mean using our position and status to advocate for specific changes in policy and/or practice (i.e., writing op-ed pieces, signing on as a direct supporter, testifying on issues, etc). By learning we mean supporting activities or initiatives to increase HSF’s institutional understanding of issues, activities that promote and enhance the public’s understanding about our issues, and activities that facilitate self-generated learning of our partners with and from each other (for instance, our support of the FCYO’s Occasional Paper Series). The Beyond Grantmaking section of the website will feature our efforts to advance our Leveraging and Learning work. This section will evolve over time as we develop this aspect of our work more fully. Please come back and check it periodically. |
